Step by step

The question

Question: solve 2x/3 = 8.

2x3 = 8

1 Remove the fraction

The bottom number is 3.

A fraction means divide: 2x/3 is 2x divided by 3.

To remove divided by 3, we multiply by 3.

We multiply every part by 3, not only the fraction.

Each whole side is times 3, so 8 is times 3 too.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

3 × 2x3 = 3 × 8

3 divided by 3 is 1.

The bottom is gone.

We write it again, without the crossed-out parts.

2x = 3 × 8

3 times 8 is 24.

No more fractions!

2x = 24

2 Remove the 2

2x means 2 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 2, we divide by 2.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

2x2 = 242

2 divided by 2 is 1.

So just x is left.

24 divided by 2 is 12.

242 = 12

So x = 12!

x = 12

3 Check

Let's check: put 12 in place of x.

Check: 2(12)3 = 8

We get 8, the same as the right side.

So x = 12 is right!

4 Type it in

The answer box takes 5 characters.

12 has 2.

It fits.

12: 2 characters, up to 5 fit

We type 12.

Let's look back.

First: remove the fraction.

Then: remove the 2.

Then: check.

Last: type it in.

Answer
x = 12

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

4x6 = 8
Show the answer
x = 12
