The question

Question: find the volume of a box 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high.

1 Length × width × height

Volume is how much space is inside.

We count the 1 by 1 by 1 cubes that fit.

The volume of a box is V = length × width × height.

V = length × width × height

Now put the numbers in: length = 5, width = 4 and height = 3.

V = 5 × 4 × 3

The bottom layer is 5 cubes by 4 cubes.

5 times 4 is 20.

That is one layer of 20 cubes.

There are 3 layers.

So V = 20 × 3.

V = 20 × 3

20 times 3 is 60.

We count cubes, so the unit is cm³.

So the volume is 60 cm³.

V = 60 cm3
Answer
V = 60 cm3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the volume of a box 7 cm long, 4 cm wide and 2 cm high.
Show the answer
V = 56 cm3
