Step by step

The question

Question: find the volume of a prism with base area 18 cm² and length 7 cm.

1 Base times length

A prism has the same shape all the way through.

The face at the end is the base.

Its area is A = 18 cm².

Like a box: the base is one layer of 18 cubes.

The prism is 7 long, so it has 7 layers.

So the volume is V = A × length.

V = A × length

Now put the numbers in: A = 18 and length = 7.

V = 18 × 7

18 times 7 is 126.

We count cubes, so the unit is cm³.

So the volume is 126 cm³.

V = 126 cm3
Answer
V = 126 cm3

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the volume of a prism with base area 18 cm² and length 3 cm.
Show the answer
V = 54 cm3
