Step by step

The question

Question: find the residual for the line of best fit y = 3x + 5 and the point (4, 15).

The point is the real data.

y = 3x + 5; (4, 15)

A residual tells how far a point is from the line.

Residual = actual minus predicted.

Actual is the real y.

Predicted is the y the line gives.

residual = actual − predicted

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Predict

We put x = 4 into the line.

It predicts y = 17.

predicted = 3(4) + 5 = 12 + 5 = 17

2 Actual minus predicted

Careful!

Not predicted minus actual.

That flips the sign.

Actual comes first, so a point above the line gets a plus.

Careful: not 17 − 15 = 2 ✗

The actual y is 15.

15 minus 17 is −2.

residual = 15 − 17 = −2

So the residual is −2.

It is negative: the point is 2 below the line.

3 Check

Let's check with a picture.

Each square up is 5.

The line of best fit.

The point.

The residual is the distance up or down from the line to the point.

And predicted plus residual gives the actual y: 15.

So the answer is right!

17 − 2 = 15

4 Pick the choice

Our answer is residual = −2.

That is choice A.

A) −2

5 Why not the others

B is 17.

Wrong: that is the predicted value.

B) 17 ✗ that is the predicted value

C is 2.

Wrong: predicted minus actual: it is actual minus predicted.

That is the Careful mistake from before.

C) 2 ✗ predicted minus actual: it is actual minus predicted

D is 15.

Wrong: that is the actual value.

D) 15 ✗ that is the actual value

Let's look back.

First: predict.

Then: actual minus predicted.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
residual = 15 − 17 = −2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the residual for the line of best fit y = 3x + 8; (4, 17)
Show the answer
residual = −3
