Step by step

The question

Question: A walker walks 5 km in 75 minutes.

What is her speed in km/h?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

The walker goes 5 km in 75 minutes.

What do we want?

The speed, in km per hour.

2 Name the unknown

We don't know the speed.

So we call it x km/h.

x = speed (km/h)

Speed is in km per hour.

So the time must be in hours too.

1 hour is 60 minutes.

So 75 minutes is 75/60, which is 5/4 of an hour.

75 min = 7560 h = 54 h

Careful!

5 divided by 75 gives km in each minute, not in each hour.

So we use the time in hours.

Careful: not 5 ÷ 75 = … km/h ✗

How far we go: speed times time.

distance = speed × time

3 Write the equation

In words: speed times time makes the distance.

5x4 = 5

So the equation is 5x/4 = 5.

Now we solve it.

5x4 = 5

4 Remove the fraction

The bottom number is 4.

Times 4 will remove it.

We multiply every part by 4.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

4 × 5x4 = 4 × 5

4 divided by 4 is 1.

Write what is left.

5x = 4 × 5

Do the multiplications.

No more fractions!

5x = 20

5 Remove the 5

5x means 5 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 5, we divide by 5.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

5x5 = 205

5 divided by 5 is 1.

So just x is left.

20 divided by 5 is 4.

205 = 4

So x = 4!

x = 4

6 Answer the question

So the speed is 4 km/h.

7 Check

Let's check in the story.

4 km/h for 5/4 of an hour: 4 times 5/4 is 5 km, like the story says.

So the answer is right!

4 × 54 = 5 km

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 4

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
