Step by step

The question

Question: Adult tickets cost $8 and child tickets cost $5.

A theatre sold 10 more child tickets than adult tickets.

It made $440.

How many of each ticket did it sell?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

Two kinds: adult tickets cost $8 each, child tickets cost $5 each.

There are 10 more child tickets than adult tickets.

All the money: $440.

What do we want?

How many adult tickets, and how many child tickets.

2 Name the unknown

We know the child tickets from the adult tickets.

So we start with the adult tickets.

We call how many there are x.

x = adult tickets

10 more: x + 10.

x + 10 = child tickets

Careful!

There are 10 more child tickets than adult tickets.

So the + 10 goes with the child tickets, not the adult tickets.

Careful: not x + 10 = adult tickets ✗

Let's put it in a table: how many, the price, and the money.

Adult tickets: x of them, $8 each.

Child tickets: x + 10 of them, $5 each.

Money = how many times the price.

8 times x is 8x.

5 times all of x + 10 is 5(x + 10).

We keep x + 10 together in brackets.

The total: $440 in all.

3 Write the equation

In words: the adult money plus the child money makes all the money.

8x + 5(x + 10) = 440

So the equation is 8x + 5(x + 10) = 440.

Now we solve it.

8x + 5(x + 10) = 440

4 Open the brackets

The 5 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 5 times each part.

8x + 5 × x + 5 × 10 = 440

Work out each multiplication.

8x + 5x + 50 = 440

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

8x + 5x = 13x.

8x + 5x = 13x

Now we have 13x + 50 = 440.

13x + 50 = 440

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 13 and + 50.

The + 50 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 13.

6 Remove the + 50

To remove + 50, we take away 50.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

13x + 50 − 50 = 440 − 50

+ 50 and − 50 make zero.

Cross them out.

440 − 50 = 390.

440 − 50 = 390

Now we have 13x = 390.

13x = 390

7 Remove the 13

13x means 13 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 13, we divide by 13.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

13x13 = 39013

13 divided by 13 is 1.

So just x is left.

390 divided by 13 is 30.

39013 = 30

So x = 30!

x = 30

8 Answer the question

Child tickets: x + 10.

30 + 10 = 40.

x + 10 = 30 + 10 = 40

So 30 adult tickets and 40 child tickets.

9 Check

Let's check in the story.

40 is 10 more than 30, like the story says.

40 − 30 = 10

The money: $240 plus $200 makes $440, like the story says.

30 × $8 + 40 × $5 = $240 + $200 = $440

Does it make sense?

Both are whole numbers, not below 0.

That fits tickets.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: 30 and 40: whole, 0 or more

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.
