Step by step

The question

Question: find the angle between u = ⟨4, 3⟩ and v = ⟨0, 5⟩.

u = ⟨4, 3⟩ and v = ⟨0, 5⟩

1 Find u • v

The dot product: across times across, plus up times up.

u • v = 4 × 0 + 3 × 5

4 times 0 is 0.

3 times 5 is 15.

u • v = 0 + 15

0 plus 15 is 15.

So u • v = 15.

u • v = 15

2 Find the lengths

The length of u: Pythagoras.

16 plus 9 is 25.

The square root is 5.

‖u‖ = √42 + 32 = √25 = 5

The length of v: Pythagoras.

0 plus 25 is 25.

The square root is 5.

‖v‖ = √02 + 52 = √25 = 5

3 Use the angle rule

The rule: cos θ is the dot product over the two lengths multiplied.

cos θ = u • v‖u‖ × ‖v‖

Now put the numbers in: u • v = 15 and the lengths.

cos θ = 155 × 5

We can make 15/25 simpler.

It is the same as 3/5.

cos θ = 35

4 Find θ

The cos⁻¹ button turns it back into the angle.

θ = cos−1(35)

Careful!

That number is cos θ, not the angle.

We still need cos⁻¹.

Careful: not θ = 3 over 5 ✗

The calculator gives about 53.13.

To the nearest tenth, θ ≈ 53.1°.

θ ≈ 53.1°

5 Check

Does it make sense?

Let's draw u and v.

The angle between them is less than a square corner.

And the dot product is positive, so θ is less than 90°.

53.1° fits!

u • v > 0 → θ < 90°

Let's look back.

First: find u • v.

Then: find the lengths.

Then: use the angle rule.

Then: find θ.

Last: check.

Answer
θ ≈ 53.1°

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find the angle between u = ⟨3, 4⟩ and v = ⟨0, 6⟩
Show the answer
θ ≈ 36.9°
