Step by step

The question

Question: find the arc length s of a circle with radius 4 and angle π/2.

The arc is the curved part of the edge.

We know the radius: r = 4.

r = 4

And the angle: θ = π/2.

θ = π2

1 Write the rule

The rule for the arc length: s = rθ.

θ must be in radians.

s = rθ

Why?

A full turn is 2π.

Then s is 2π times r: the whole edge of the circle.

A smaller angle gives a part of it.

θ = 2π: s = 2πr, the whole edge

Careful!

The rule only works with the angle in radians.

Ours already is.

Careful: θ in radians, not degrees

2 Put the numbers in

Now put the numbers in: r = 4 and θ = π/2.

s = 4 × π2

3 Work it out

4 times π is 4π.

The bottom stays 2.

s = 4π2

4 and 2 can both be divided by 2.

4 ÷ 2 is 2.

2 ÷ 2 is 1.

4 ÷ 2 = 2
2 ÷ 2 = 1

So s = 2π.

That is the exact answer.

With the calculator, π is about 3.14159.

So s is about 6.28, to the nearest hundredth.

s = 2π ≈ 6.28

4 Check

Let's check another way.

π/2 is a part of the full turn, 2π: 1/4 of it.

π22π = 14

The whole edge is 2π r: 8π.

whole edge: 2π × 4 = 8π

1/4 of 8π is 2π.

The same answer!

So it is right.

14 × 8π = 2π

Let's look back.

First: write the rule.

Then: put the numbers in.

Then: work it out.

Last: check.

Answer
s = 2π ≈ 6.28

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Arc length: radius 8, angle π4
Show the answer
s = 2π ≈ 6.28
