Step by step
The question
Question: work out 3 − 2/5.
1 Write as fractions
A whole number is a fraction over 1.
3 is 3/1.
2 Make the bottoms the same
The bottom numbers are 1 and 5.
They are different, so we can't take away the tops yet.
We make both bottoms 5.
1 times 5 is 5.
So 3 gets times 5/5.
2/5 already has 5 at the bottom.
We multiply the top and the bottom by the same number.
5/5 is 1.
Times 1 does not change the size.
So the fraction stays the same, only the bottom changes.
Top times top.
Bottom times bottom.
3 times 5 is 15.
1 times 5 is 5.
Now both have 5 at the bottom.
3 Take away the tops
The bottoms are the same, so the pieces are the same size.
We take away the tops.
The bottom stays 5, because the size of the pieces does not change.
15 minus 2 is 13.
Can we make it simpler?
No number goes into both 13 and 5, except 1.
So it stays like this.
So the answer is 13/5.
Let's look back.
First: write as fractions.
Then: make the bottoms the same.
Last: take away the tops.
