Step by step

The question

Question: a sample of 25 has mean 70, and the SD of all the numbers is 10: find the 90% confidence interval for the true mean.

90% interval for μ: x̄ = 70, σ = 10, n = 25

x̄, the sample mean, is 70: the middle of our interval.

σ, the SD of all the numbers, is known: 10.

And n, the sample size, is 25.

x̄: the sample mean, the middle
σ: the SD of all the numbers (known)
n: the sample size

The interval goes from the sample mean minus the error bound, EBM, to the sample mean plus the error bound.

interval = x̄ − EBM to x̄ + EBM

1 Find z*

90 percent of the bell is in the middle.

That leaves 10 percent: 5 percent in each end.

90% in the middle: 10% left over, 5% in each end

z* marks the cut between the middle and the ends.

Left of z* are the middle and one end: 0.9 plus 0.05 is 0.9500.

left of z* = 0.9 + 0.05 = 0.9500

Now we look for 0.9500 inside the table.

0.9500 is halfway between 0.9495 and 0.9505.

So z is halfway between 1.64 and 1.65: 1.645.

z* = 1.645

2 Error bound

The error bound: z* times σ over the square root of n.

EBM = z* × σ√n

The square root of 25 is 5.

10/5 is 2.

Times 1.645: 3.29.

EBM = 1.645 × 10√25 = 1.645 × 105 = 3.29

Careful!

We divide by the square root of 25, not by 25.

Careful: not 1025 ✗

3 The interval

Take the error bound away from the middle: 70 minus 3.29 is 66.71.

= x̄ − EBM = 70 − 3.29 = 66.71

And add it: 70 plus 3.29 is 73.29.

= x̄ + EBM = 70 + 3.29 = 73.29

The 90 percent confidence interval is (66.71, 73.29).

= (66.71, 73.29)

4 Say it in words

In words: we are 90 percent confident that the true mean is between 66.71 and 73.29.

90% confident: 66.71 < μ < 73.29

5 Check

Let's check: the middle of the interval should be 70.

66.71 plus 73.29, divided by 2, is 70.

middle: (66.71 + 73.29) ÷ 2 = 70

Half the width should be the error bound: 73.29 minus 66.71, divided by 2, is 3.29.

So it is right!

half the width: (73.29 − 66.71) ÷ 2 = 3.29

Let's look back.

First: find z*.

Then: error bound.

Then: the interval.

Then: say it in words.

Last: check.

Answer
= (66.71, 73.29)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

90% interval for μ: x̄ = 75, σ = 30, n = 25
Show the answer
(65.13, 84.87)
