Step by step

The question

Question: Coffee costs $18 per kg and chicory costs $6 per kg.

A shop mixes them to make 15 kg of blend that costs $10 per kg.

How many kg of each does it use?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

Coffee: $18 per kg.

Chicory: $6 per kg.

They make 15 kg of blend, at $10 per kg.

What do we want?

How many kg of coffee, and how many of chicory.

2 Name the unknown

We don't know how many kg of coffee.

So we call it x.

x = kg of coffee

The rest is chicory.

15 kg in all, take away the x kg of coffee: 15 − x.

15 − x = kg of chicory

Let's put it in a table: how much, the price, and the cost.

Coffee: x kg at $18.

Chicory: 15 − x kg at $6.

Cost = how much times the price.

18 times x is 18x.

6 times all of 15 − x is 6(15 − x).

We keep 15 − x together in brackets.

The mix: 15 kg at $10.

15 times 10 is $150.

3 Write the equation

In words: the coffee cost plus the chicory cost makes the cost of the mix.

18x + 6(15 − x) = 150

So the equation is 18x + 6(15 − x) = 150.

Now we solve it.

18x + 6(15 − x) = 150

Careful!

Many people take half of each.

But half and half costs (18 + 6) ÷ 2 = $12 per kg, not $10.

Careful: not half of each ✗
half and half: (18 + 6) ÷ 2 = $12 per kg

4 Open the brackets

The 6 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 6 times each part.

18x + 6 × 15 + 6 × (−x) = 150

Work out each multiplication.

18x + 90 − 6x = 150

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

18x − 6x = 12x.

18x − 6x = 12x

Now we have 12x + 90 = 150.

12x + 90 = 150

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 12 and + 90.

The + 90 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 12.

6 Remove the + 90

To remove + 90, we take away 90.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

12x + 90 − 90 = 150 − 90

+ 90 and − 90 make zero.

Cross them out.

150 − 90 = 60.

150 − 90 = 60

Now we have 12x = 60.

12x = 60

7 Remove the 12

12x means 12 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 12, we divide by 12.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

12x12 = 6012

12 divided by 12 is 1.

So just x is left.

60 divided by 12 is 5.

6012 = 5

So x = 5!

x = 5

8 Answer the question

Chicory: 15 − 5 = 10.

15 − x = 15 − 5 = 10

So 5 kg of coffee and 10 kg of chicory.

9 Check

Let's check in the story.

5 kg and 10 kg make 15 kg, like the story says.

5 + 10 = 15 kg

The cost: $90 plus $60 is $150.

That is 15 kg at $10, like the story says.

5 × $18 + 10 × $6 = $90 + $60 = $150

Does it make sense?

The mix costs between the two prices, $6 and $18.

That makes sense.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: $10 is between $6 and $18

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.
