Step by step

The question

Question: draw a dot plot of 3, 5, 4, 6, 5, 7, 5, 4, 6, 5, 8 and 5.

How many are 6 or more?

3, 5, 4, 6, 5, 7, 5, 4, 6, 5, 8, 5

1 Draw the number line

The number line goes from the smallest number, 3, to the biggest, 8.

2 Put the dots

The first number is 3.

We cross it out, and put a dot over 3.

Next is 5: a dot over 5.

And so on: one dot for each number.

Another 5: its dot goes on top of the first one.

Every number is crossed out, so every number has its dot.

3 Read the plot

Careful!

6 or more means 6 itself counts too.

Careful: 6 or more: 6 counts too

6: 2 dots.

7: 1 dot.

8: 1 dot.

We add them: 2 plus 1 plus 1 is 4.

So 4 numbers are 6 or more.

= 6 or more: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4

4 Check

Let's check: the other numbers make 8 dots.

4 plus 8 is 12, all the numbers.

So it is right!

4 + 8 = 12 numbers

Let's look back.

First: draw the number line.

Then: put the dots.

Then: read the plot.

Last: check.

Answer
= 6 or more: 2 + 1 + 1 = 4
