Step by step

The question

Question: draw a dot plot of 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 5, 6, 8 and 5.

How many are less than 6?

4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 5, 6, 8, 5

1 Draw the number line

The number line goes from the smallest number, 4, to the biggest, 8.

2 Put the dots

The first number is 4.

We cross it out, and put a dot over 4.

Next is 5: a dot over 5.

Another 5: its dot goes on top of the first one.

Every number is crossed out, so every number has its dot.

3 Read the plot

Careful!

Less than 6 means 6 itself does not count.

Careful: less than 6: 6 does not count

4: 1 dot.

5: 4 dots.

We add them: 1 plus 4 is 5.

So 5 numbers are less than 6.

= less than 6: 1 + 4 = 5

4 Check

Let's check: the other numbers make 4 dots.

5 plus 4 is 9, all the numbers.

So it is right!

5 + 4 = 9 numbers

Let's look back.

First: draw the number line.

Then: put the dots.

Then: read the plot.

Last: check.

Answer
= less than 6: 1 + 4 = 5

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
