Expand (x + 3)^3 as three brackets

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Expanding three brackets · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: expand (x + 3)³.

Expand (x + 3)³

Expand means: multiply out all the brackets.

The power 3 means three of the same bracket: (x + 3) times itself, three times.

1 Multiply the first two

First the first two brackets: (x + 3)(x + 3).

The third waits.

= (x + 3)(x + 3)

Careful!

Cubing a bracket is not cubing each part.

All three brackets must be multiplied out.

Careful: not x³ + 27 ✗

Each part of the first bracket multiplies the whole second bracket.

(a + b)(c + d) = a(c + d) + b(c + d)

The parts of the first bracket are x and 3.

Each one takes the whole second bracket.

= x(x + 3) + 3(x + 3)

What is in front of a bracket multiplies every part inside.

a(b + c) = ab + ac

So we write each part times what is in front.

= x(x) + x(3) + 3(x) + 3(3)

x times x is x².

x times 3 is 3x.

3 times x is 3x.

3 times 3 is 9.

= x2 + 3x + 3x + 9

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

Each colour is one kind.

like terms = same letters,
same powers

3x + 3x is 6x.

It is like 3 apples plus 3 apples: that is 6 apples.

3x + 3x = 6x

So the expression is x² + 6x + 9.

= x2 + 6x + 9

2 Times the third bracket

Now this answer times the third bracket, (x + 3).

Each part of the long bracket meets every part of the third.

= (x2 + 6x + 9)(x + 3)

Each part of the first bracket multiplies the whole second bracket.

(a + b)(c + d) = a(c + d) + b(c + d)

The parts of the first bracket are x² and 6x and 9.

Each one takes the whole second bracket.

= x2(x + 3) + 6x(x + 3) + 9(x + 3)

What is in front of a bracket multiplies every part inside.

a(b + c) = ab + ac

So we write each part times what is in front.

= x2(x) + x2(3) + 6x(x) + 6x(3) + 9(x) + 9(3)

x² times x is x³.

x² times 3 is 3x².

6x times x is 6x².

6x times 3 is 18x.

= x3 + 3x2 + 6x2 + 18x + 9x + 27

3 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x² terms go together.

Each colour is one kind.

like terms = same letters,
same powers

3x² + 6x² is 9x².

It is like 3 apples plus 6 apples: that is 9 apples.

18x + 9x is 27x.

3x2 + 6x2 = 9x2
18x + 9x = 27x

So the expression is x³ + 9x² + 27x + 27.

= x3 + 9x2 + 27x + 27

4 Check

Let's check.

We pick a number: x = 2.

We put it into the start: 125.

Start: (2 + 3)(2 + 3)(2 + 3) = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125

Now into our answer.

Both give 125.

Same value, so x³ + 9x² + 27x + 27 is right!

Answer: 2³ + 9(2²) + 27(2) + 27 = 125

Let's look back.

First: multiply the first two.

Then: times the third bracket.

Then: group like terms.

Last: check.

Answer
= x3 + 9x2 + 27x + 27

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Expand (a + 3)³
Show the answer
a³ + 9a² + 27a + 27
