Step by step

The question

Question: expand (x + 3)³.

(x + 3)3

Careful!

A power of a bracket is not the power of each part.

(x + 3) to the power 3 is the bracket times itself 3 times.

There are middle terms too.

Careful: not (x + 3)3 = x3 + 33 ✗

1 Use Pascal's triangle

Pascal's triangle starts with 1.

Every row starts and ends with 1.

Each other number is the two numbers above it added.

2 The pattern

There are 4 terms.

The numbers in front come from row 3: 1, 3, 3, 1.

numbers in front : 1, 3, 3, 1

The powers of x go down from 3 to 0.

powers of x : 3, 2, 1, 0

The powers of 3 go up from 0 to 3.

powers of (3) : 0, 1, 2, 3

Remember: any number to the power 0 is 1.

any number0 = 1

3 Work out each term

The first term: 1, x to the power 3, 3 to the power 0.

That is x³.

1 × x3 × 30 = x3

Second term: 3 times 3 is 9.

So 9x².

3 × x2 × 31 = 3 × 3 × x2 = 9x2

Third term: 3 to the power 2 is 9.

3 times 9 is 27.

So 27x.

3 × x1 × 32 = 3 × 9 × x = 27x

Fourth term: 3 to the power 3 is 27.

So 27.

1 × x0 × 33 = 27

4 Add them up

So (x + 3)³ is x³ + 9x² + 27x + 27.

(x + 3)3 = x3 + 9x2 + 27x + 27

5 Check

Let's check with x = 1.

The question: 4 to the power 3 is 64.

x = 1: (1 + 3)3 = 43 = 64

Our answer with x = 1: the terms add up to 64 too.

It works!

answer: 1 + 9 + 27 + 27 = 64

Let's look back.

First: use Pascal's triangle.

Then: the pattern.

Then: work out each term.

Then: add them up.

Last: check.

Answer
(x + 3)3 = x3 + 9x2 + 27x + 27

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Expand (x + 2)3
Show the answer
x3 + 6x2 + 12x + 8
