Factor 3x^2 + 10x + 8

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Factoring · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: factor 3x² + 10x + 8.

Factor means: write it as a times, with brackets.

3x2 + 10x + 8

1 Find two numbers

The number in front of x² is 3.

So we multiply 3 by 8: that is 24.

We need two numbers that multiply to 24 and add to 10.

3 × 8 = 24
? × ? = 24, ? + ? = 10

They multiply to a plus number, so the two numbers have the same sign.

They add to a plus number, so both are plus.

× is + → same signs: both +

We list the pairs that make 24, smallest first.

We add each pair.

We need 10.

4 and 6 give 10.

Yes!

1 × 24: 1 + 24 = 25
2 × 12: 2 + 12 = 14
3 × 8: 3 + 8 = 11
4 × 6: 4 + 6 = 10 ✓

2 Split the middle

We write 10x as 4x + 6x.

It is the same amount.

= 3x2 + 4x + 6x + 8

3 Group in pairs

We put the first two together, and the last two together.

= (3x2 + 4x) + (6x + 8)

From the first pair we take out x.

From the second pair we take out 2.

Both leave the same bracket.

(3x2 + 4x) = x(3x + 4)
(6x + 8) = 2(3x + 4)

Now both parts have 3x + 4 in them.

= x(3x + 4) + 2(3x + 4)

4 Same bracket out

3x + 4 is in both parts, so we take it out once.

What is left, x + 2, goes in the other bracket.

ab + cb = b(a + c)

So we get (3x + 4)(x + 2).

= (3x + 4)(x + 2)

5 Check

Let's check: we multiply it back out.

Each part of the first bracket times each part of the second.

Check: (3x + 4)(x + 2) = 3x2 + 6x + 4x + 8
= 3x2 + 10x + 8

We get 3x² + 10x + 8 again.

So (3x + 4)(x + 2) is right!

Let's look back.

First: find two numbers.

Then: split the middle.

Then: group in pairs.

Then: same bracket out.

Last: check.

Answer
= (3x + 4)(x + 2)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Factor 4x2 + 15x + 9
