Step by step

The question

Question: factor y³ + 64.

y3 + 64

1 Write as cubes

Cubes are a number times itself three times: 2 × 2 × 2 = 8, 3 × 3 × 3 = 27.

y³ is y cubed.

64 is 4 cubed.

cubes: 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000
y3 = (y)3, 64 = 4³

So it is a sum of two cubes: a is y and b is 4.

= (y)3 + 43

2 Use the pattern

Here is the pattern.

The first bracket has the same sign as the question.

In the second bracket the middle sign is the opposite one, and the last sign is always plus.

a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²)
first bracket: same sign (+); middle: opposite (−); last: +

We put a = y and b = 4 into the pattern.

= (y + 4)(y2 − y × 4 + 42)

Careful!

It is not (y + 4)³.

Multiplied out, that has y² and y terms too.

Careful: not (y + 4)³ ✗

3 Tidy up

y squared is y².

y times 4 is 4y.

4 squared is 16.

(y)² = y², y × 4 = 4y, 4² = 16

So we get (y + 4)(y² − 4y + 16).

= (y + 4)(y2 − 4y + 16)

The second bracket can't be factored: with this pattern it never can.

4 Check

Let's check: we multiply it back out.

Each part of one bracket times each part of the other.

Check: (y + 4)(y2 − 4y + 16)
= y3 − 4y2 + 16y + 4y2 − 16y + 64 = y3 + 64

We get y³ + 64 again.

So it is right!

Let's look back.

First: write as cubes.

Then: use the pattern.

Then: tidy up.

Last: check.

Answer
= (y + 4)(y2 − 4y + 16)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Factor y3 + 27
Show the answer
(y + 3)(y2 − 3y + 9)
