Graph y = 3 and x = 2

Step by step

The question

Question: graph y = 3 and x = 2.

y = 3 and x = 2

Two new words.

Vertical means straight up and down.

Horizontal means flat, going across.

horizontal = flat
vertical = up and down

1 Read the equations

y = 3 has only y: y is always 3.

It is a horizontal line.

x = 2 has only x: x is always 2.

It is a vertical line.

y = 3 → horizontal
x = 2 → vertical

2 Draw y = 3

Draw the grid.

The x-axis goes across.

The y-axis goes up and down.

They meet at 0.

That point is called the origin.

y = 3 crosses the y-axis at 3.

Draw a horizontal line through it: flat, across.

3 Draw x = 2

x = 2 crosses the x-axis at 2.

Draw a vertical line through it: straight up and down.

4 Where they meet

The lines meet at one point.

There x = 2 and y = 3.

So they meet at (2, 3).

(x, y) = (2, 3)

5 Check

Let's check: (2, 3) has x = 2, so it is on the second line.

It has y = 3, so it is on the first line too.

Right!

(2, 3): x = 2, y = 3

Let's look back.

First: read the equations.

Then: draw y = 3.

Then: draw x = 2.

Then: where they meet.

Last: check.

Answer
(x, y) = (2, 3)

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Graph y = 5 and x = 2
Show the answer
(x, y) = (2, 5)
