Step by step

The question

Question: find the inverse of f(x) = 3x − 6.

f(x) = 3x − 6

The inverse function goes back.

We pick a small number that gives a whole answer.

For example, f takes 2 to 0.

The inverse takes 0 back to 2.

inverse = goes back
f(2) = 3(2) − 6
= 6 − 6
= 0
f −1: 0 → 2

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Write y for f(x)

f(x) is the answer that comes out.

Let's call it y.

y = 3x − 6

2 Swap x and y

The inverse goes back: the answer goes in, and the start comes out.

So x and y swap places.

x = 3y − 6

Look at our numbers.

For f, x is 2 and y is 0.

For the inverse, x is 0 and y is 2.

f: x = 2
y = 0
f −1: x = 0, y
= 2

Now we find y again, like in any formula.

3 y on the left

y is on the right.

We swap the two sides, so y is on the left.

They are still equal.

3y − 6 = x

Is y alone now?

Not yet: − 6 is still with y.

How do we remove it?

4 Remove the − 6

We want y by itself.

The −6 is in the way.

To remove −6, we add 6.

We do it on both sides.

3y − 6 + 6 = x + 6

−6 and + 6 cancel each other.

They make zero.

Now we have 3y = x + 6.

3y = x + 6

So after step 4: we added 6, and now we have 3y = x + 6.

← step 4: added 6

Is y alone now?

Not yet: 3y means 3 times y.

5 Remove the 3

To remove times 3, we divide by 3.

We do it on both sides.

3y3 = x + 63

3 divided by 3 is 1.

They cancel each other.

So just y is left.

So y = (x + 6)/3.

y = x + 63

So after step 5: we divided by 3, and now we have y = x + 6/3.

← step 5: divided by 3

6 Write the inverse

This y is the inverse.

We write it f⁻¹(x).

f −1(x) = x + 63

The little −1 is part of the name.

It is not a power.

the −1 is a name,
not a power

7 Check

Let's check with a number.

Put 2 into f.

We get 0.

f(2) = 3(2) − 6 = 6 − 6 = 0

Now put 0 into the inverse.

We get 2.

f −1(0) = 0 + 63 = 63 = 2

The inverse took 0 back to 2.

So f⁻¹(x) = (x + 6)/3 is right!

8 Pick the choice

Our answer is f⁻¹(x) = (x + 6)/3.

That is choice B.

B) x + 63

9 Why not the others

A is (x − 6)/3.

Wrong: took 6 away: we undo − 6 by adding 6.

A) x − 63 ✗ took 6 away: we undo − 6 by adding 6

C is 3x + 6.

Wrong: undid − 6 but not × 3: we divide by 3.

C) 3x + 6 ✗ undid − 6 but not × 3: we divide by 3

D is 1/(3x − 6).

Wrong: that is 1/f(x), not the inverse.

D) 13x − 6 ✗ that is 1 over f(x), not the inverse

Let's look back.

First: write y for f(x).

Then: swap x and y.

Then: y on the left.

Then: remove the − 6.

Then: remove the 3.

Then: write the inverse.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
f −1(x) = x + 63

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

f(x) = 5x − 6, find f −1(x)
Show the answer
f −1(x) = x + 65
