Step by step

The question

Question: Jo wants to earn $30 interest in 6 months.

The bank pays 4% simple interest per year.

How much must he put in?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

The interest: $30.

The time: 6 months.

The rate: 4% each year.

What do we want?

The money put in.

2 Name the unknown

We don't know the money put in.

So we call it x.

x = money put in

4% means 4 out of 100: 4/100.

A year has 12 months.

So 6 months is 6/12, 1/2 of a year.

4% = 4100
6 months = 612 year = 12 year

Here is the rule for it.

Interest = money put in, times the rate, times the years.

interest = money in × rate × years

In short: I = P × r × t.

Interest is extra money for using money.

Simple interest is the same amount every year.

I = P × r × t
interest: extra money,
the same every year

3 Write the equation

In words: the money put in, times the rate, times the years, makes the interest.

x × 4100 × 12 = 30

So the equation is x × 4/100 × 1/2 = 30.

Now we solve it.

x × 4100 × 12 = 30

Careful!

4% is 4 out of 100.

So in the rule it is 4/100, not 4.

Careful: 4% = 4100, not 4

4 Multiply the numbers we know

The numbers we know: 4/100, times 1/2 of a year.

4 times 1/2 is 2.

4 × 12 = 2

So x times 4/200.

x × 4200 = 30

Simplify: 4/200 is 1/50.

4200 = 150

x times 1/50 is x/50.

x50 = 30

5 Remove the fraction

The bottom number is 50.

Times 50 will remove it.

We multiply every part by 50.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

50 × x50 = 50 × 30

50 divided by 50 is 1.

Write what is left.

x = 50 × 30

Do the multiplications.

No more fractions!

x = 1500

So x = 1500!

6 Answer the question

So the money put in is $1500.

7 Check

Let's check in the story.

In 1 year: 4/100 of $1500 is $60.

1 year: $1500 × 4100 = $60

1/2 of a year: $30 of interest, like the story says.

6 months: 12 × $60 = $30

Does it make sense?

The interest is less than the money put in.

That makes sense for 4% a year.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: $30 < $1500

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.
