Kx + 3 = 2x + 7 has no solution. Find k.

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Find k · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: for which k does kx + 3 = 2x + 7 have no solution?

kx + 3 = 2x + 7

No solution means no number works for x.

no solution = no x works

1 Compare the x parts

The x parts: kx on the left and 2x on the right.

If the x parts were different, taking one away would still leave some x.

Then we could find x: just one x would work.

different x parts → just one x works

We want no x to work.

So the x parts must be the same: kx = 2x.

kx = 2x

k times x is 2 times x when k is 2.

So k = 2.

k = 2

Careful!

With k not 2, the x parts are different.

Then just one x works.

We want none.

Careful: not k ≠ 2 ✗

Now the x parts are the same.

We still have to look at the numbers.

We put k = 2 in.

2 Take away the x part

We take away 2x on both sides.

They stay equal.

2x + 3 − 2x = 2x + 7 − 2x

2x and − 2x make zero.

Cross them out.

The x parts are gone.

Now we have 3 = 7.

3 = 7

When the x parts are gone, what is left is either always true or never true.

3 = 7 is never true.

So no x works.

That is what we want.

always true → every x works
never true → no x works

So k = 2.

k = 2

3 Check

Let's check.

We put k = 2 back in.

2x + 3 = 2x + 7

Try one number, x = 1.

The left side: 2 × 1 + 3 = 2 + 3 = 5.

x = 1: left 2 × 1 + 3 = 2 + 3 = 5

The right side: 2 × 1 + 7 = 2 + 7 = 9.

x = 1: right 2 × 1 + 7 = 2 + 7 = 9

5 and 9 are not equal.

With the same x parts, the left side is always 4 less.

So no x works.

It works!

5 and 9: not equal, left is always 4 less

Let's look back.

First: compare the x parts.

Then: take away the x part.

Last: check.

Answer
k = 2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

For which k does kx + 7 = 4x + 10
Show the answer
k = 4
