Step by step

The question

Question: what is the percent error, if Lena guessed 2.4 m m and there were really 2.5 m?

Lena: 2.4 m actual: 2.5 m

Percent error says how far off a guess is, as a percent of the real value.

error = how far off

1 Find the error

First: how far off is it?

The bigger one minus the smaller one.

2.5 minus 2.4 is 0.1.

The error is never negative: it is a distance.

= error = 2.5 − 2.4 = 0.1

2 Compare with the actual

Now we compare the error with the real value.

The error, 0.1, goes on top.

The actual value, 2.5, goes at the bottom.

= 0.12.5
erroractual

Careful!

We divide by the actual value, 2.5.

Not by the guess.

The real value is what we compare with.

Careful: not 0.12.4 = 4.2% ✗

Decimals are hard to work with.

So we multiply the top and the bottom by 10.

Times 10/10 is times 1: the size stays.

= 0.1 × 102.5 × 10 = 125

3 Write it as a percent

Percent means out of 100.

25 times 4 is 100.

So we multiply the top and the bottom by 4.

1 times 4 is 4.

= 1 × 425 × 4 = 4100

4 out of 100 is 4%.

= 4%

So the percent error is 4%.

The guess was 4% too low.

4 Check

Let's check: 4% of the actual value should give the error.

4% is 0.04.

0.04 times 2.5 is 0.1.

4% of 2.5 = 0.04 × 2.5 = 0.1

That is the error, 0.1.

So the answer is right!

Let's look back.

First: find the error.

Then: compare with the actual.

Then: write it as a percent.

Last: check.

Answer
= 4%
