Step by step

The question

Question: Nadia has 5-cent coins and 50-cent coins.

She has 7 more 5-cent coins than 50-cent coins.

The coins are worth $2.55.

How many of each coin does she have?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

Two kinds of coins: 5 cents and 50 cents each.

There are 7 more 5-cent coins than 50-cent coins.

All the coins are worth $2.55.

What do we want?

How many 50-cent coins, and how many 5-cent coins.

2 Name the unknown

We know the 5-cent coins from the 50-cent coins.

So we start with the 50-cent coins.

We call how many there are x.

x = 50-cent coins

7 more: x + 7.

x + 7 = 5-cent coins

We work in cents, so every number is whole.

$1 is 100 cents.

So $2.55 is 255 cents.

$1 = 100 cents
$2.55 = 255 cents

Careful!

There are 7 more 5-cent coins than 50-cent coins.

So the + 7 goes with the 5-cent coins, not the 50-cent coins.

Careful: not x + 7 = 50-cent coins ✗

Let's put it in a table: how many coins, the value of one, and the money in cents.

50-cent coins: x of them, 50 cents each.

5-cent coins: x + 7 of them, 5 cents each.

Money = how many times the value of one coin.

50 times x is 50x.

5 times all of x + 7 is 5(x + 7).

We keep x + 7 together in brackets.

The total: 255 cents in all.

3 Write the equation

In words: the 50-cent money plus the 5-cent money makes all the money.

50x + 5(x + 7) = 255

So the equation is 50x + 5(x + 7) = 255.

Now we solve it.

50x + 5(x + 7) = 255

4 Open the brackets

The 5 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 5 times each part.

50x + 5 × x + 5 × 7 = 255

Work out each multiplication.

50x + 5x + 35 = 255

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

50x + 5x = 55x.

50x + 5x = 55x

Now we have 55x + 35 = 255.

55x + 35 = 255

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 55 and + 35.

The + 35 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 55.

6 Remove the + 35

To remove + 35, we take away 35.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

55x + 35 − 35 = 255 − 35

+ 35 and − 35 make zero.

Cross them out.

255 − 35 = 220.

255 − 35 = 220

Now we have 55x = 220.

55x = 220

7 Remove the 55

55x means 55 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 55, we divide by 55.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

55x55 = 22055

55 divided by 55 is 1.

So just x is left.

220 divided by 55 is 4.

22055 = 4

So x = 4!

x = 4

8 Answer the question

5-cent coins: x + 7.

4 + 7 = 11.

x + 7 = 4 + 7 = 11

So 4 coins of 50 cents, and 11 coins of 5 cents.

9 Check

Let's check in the story.

11 is 7 more than 4, like the story says.

11 − 4 = 7

The money: 200 cents plus 55 cents makes 255 cents.

4 × 50 + 11 × 5 = 200 + 55 = 255 cents

255 cents is $2.55, like the story says.

255 cents = $2.55

Does it make sense?

Both are whole numbers, not below 0.

That fits coins.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: 4 and 11: whole, 0 or more

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 4
