Step by step

The question

Question: the numbers are normal, with mean 45 and SD 5: what percent is between 50 and 60?

mean 45, SD 5: percent between 50 and 60?

Normal means the numbers make a bell shape, the same on both sides of the mean.

normal: a bell shape, the same on both sides

1 Draw the bell

The mean, 45, is in the middle.

Each mark is one SD, 5, further: 45 plus 5 is 50, then 55, then 60.

And going down: 40, 35, 30.

2 The 68-95-99.7 rule

The rule: 68 percent are within 1 SD of the mean.

95 percent within 2 SDs.

99.7 percent within 3 SDs.

within 1 SD: 68%
within 2 SD: 95%
within 3 SD: 99.7%

Split into pieces, half on each side.

68 divided by 2 is 34.

95 minus 68 is 27, half is 13.5.

99.7 minus 95 is 4.7, half is 2.35.

And 0.15 at each end.

68 ÷ 2 = 34
(95 − 68) ÷ 2 = 13.5
(99.7 − 95) ÷ 2 = 2.35
(100 − 99.7) ÷ 2 = 0.15

We write each piece on the curve.

3 Shade the part

50 is 1 SD above the mean.

60 is 3 SD above the mean.

We shade between them.

Careful!

Each rule counts both sides of the mean together.

One side is only half.

Careful: 68% is both sides: one side is 34%

4 Add the pieces

We add the shaded pieces: 13.5 plus 2.35 is 15.85%.

= between 50 and 60: 13.5 + 2.35 = 15.85%

5 Check

Let's check: the pieces not shaded add up to 84.15 percent.

rest: 0.15 + 2.35 + 13.5 + 34 + 34 + 0.15 = 84.15

15.85 plus 84.15 is 100 percent: the whole bell.

So it is right!

15.85% + 84.15% = 100%

Let's look back.

First: draw the bell.

Then: the 68-95-99.7 rule.

Then: shade the part.

Then: add the pieces.

Last: check.

Answer
= between 50 and 60: 13.5 + 2.35 = 15.85%
