Step by step

The question

Question: p varies inversely with v.

p = 30 when v = 4.

Find p when v = 8.

1 Write the rule

Varies inversely means p is a number divided by v.

When v gets bigger, p gets smaller.

We call the number k: p = k over v.

p = kv

k stays the same for every pair of numbers.

Books call it the constant of variation.

k stays the same

2 Find k

We put in p = 30 and v = 4.

30 = k4

k/4 means k divided by 4.

We want just k.

To remove divided by 4, we multiply by 4.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

30 × 4 = k4 × 4

Divided by 4, then times 4: they cancel.

Cross them out.

30 times 4 is 120.

30 × 4 = 120

So k = 120.

k = 120

3 Write the equation

We put 120 in place of k.

So the equation is p = 120 over v.

p = 120v

4 Find p

We put in v = 8.

p = 1208

Careful!

Inverse is not direct.

v got bigger, from 4 to 8.

So p must get smaller.

Careful: not p = 304 × 8 ✗

120 divided by 8 is 15.

So p = 15.

p = 15

5 Check

Let's check.

In inverse variation, v times p is always k.

First pair: 4 times 30 is 120.

v × p: 4 × 30 = 120

New pair: 8 times 15 is 120 too.

The same k.

So the answer is right!

8 × 15 = 120

Let's look back.

First: write the rule.

Then: find k.

Then: write the equation.

Then: find p.

Last: check.

Answer
p = 15

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Show the answer
p = 14
