Step by step

The question

Question: find the longest side of a right triangle with legs 6 and 8.

1 Name the sides

The longest side is called the hypotenuse.

We call it c.

It is always across from the right angle.

The two shorter sides make the right angle.

We call them a and b.

The rule for every right triangle: a² + b² = c².

a2 + b2 = c2

2 Put the numbers in

Now put the numbers in: a = 6 and b = 8.

62 + 82 = c2

3 Work out the squares

6² means 6 times 6.

That is 36.

62 = 6 × 6 = 36

8² means 8 times 8.

That is 64.

82 = 8 × 8 = 64

Write the squares: 36 + 64 = c².

36 + 64 = c2

36 plus 64 is 100.

100 = c2

4 Take the square root

c² is 100.

So c times c is 100.

That means c is the square root of 100.

c = √100

The square root of 100 is the positive number that times itself makes 100.

10 times 10 is 100.

10 × 10 = 100

So c = 10.

c = 10

The missing side is 10.

5 Check

Let's check: put c = 10 back.

First a² + b².

a2 + b2 = 62 + 82 = 36 + 64 = 100

Now c².

c2 = 102 = 100

Both are 100.

So c = 10 is right!

Let's look back.

First: name the sides.

Then: put the numbers in.

Then: work out the squares.

Then: take the square root.

Last: check.

Answer
c = 10

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
