The question

Question: find the residual for the line of best fit y = 2.2x + 0.4 and the point (3, 6).

The point is the real data.

y = 2.2x + 0.4; (3, 6)

A residual tells how far a point is from the line.

Residual = actual minus predicted.

Actual is the real y.

Predicted is the y the line gives.

residual = actual − predicted

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Predict

We put x = 3 into the line.

It predicts y = 7.

predicted = 2.2(3) + 0.4 = 6.6 + 0.4 = 7

2 Actual minus predicted

Careful!

Not predicted minus actual.

That flips the sign.

Actual comes first, so a point above the line gets a plus.

Careful: not 7 − 6 = 1 ✗

The actual y is 6.

6 minus 7 is −1.

residual = 6 − 7 = −1

So the residual is −1.

It is negative: the point is 1 below the line.

3 Check

Let's check with a picture.

The line of best fit.

The point.

The residual is the distance up or down from the line to the point.

And predicted plus residual gives the actual y: 6.

So the answer is right!

7 − 1 = 6

4 Pick the choice

Our answer is residual = −1.

That is choice A.

A) −1

5 Why not the others

B is 1.

Wrong: the residual is actual minus predicted: 6 − 7.

That is the Careful mistake from before.

B) 1 ✗ the residual is actual minus predicted: 6 − 7

C is 7.

Wrong: that is the predicted score.

C) 7 ✗ that is the predicted score

D is 0.

Wrong: (3, 6) is not on the line.

D) 0 ✗ (3, 6) is not on the line

Let's look back.

First: predict.

Then: actual minus predicted.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
residual = 6 − 7 = −1

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the residual for the line of best fit y = 2.2x + 2.4; (3, 8)
Show the answer
residual = −1
