Step by step

The question

Question: share 360 in the ratio 2 to 3 to 4.

Share 360 in the ratio 2 : 3 : 4

The ratio says how many equal parts each one gets: 2 for the first, 3 for the second and 4 for the third.

1st: 2 parts, 2nd: 3 parts, 3rd: 4 parts

Careful!

2 to 3 to 4 does not mean dividing 360 by 2 and by 3 and by 4.

It counts parts of the same size.

Careful: not 360 ÷ 2, 360 ÷ 3, 360 ÷ 4 ✗

1 Count the parts

All together there are 2 plus 3 plus 4: 9 equal parts.

2 + 3 + 4 = 9 parts

2 Draw the bar

We draw the amount as a bar of 9 equal parts.

2 parts for the first share, 3 parts for the second share and 4 parts for the third share.

All 9 parts together make 360.

3 Find one part

9 parts make 360.

So one part is 360 divided by 9: 40.

1 part = 360 ÷ 9 = 40

Every part is 40.

4 Find each share

The first share has 2 parts: 2 times 40 is 80.

1st: 2 × 40 = 80

The second share has 3 parts: 3 times 40 is 120.

2nd: 3 × 40 = 120

The third share has 4 parts: 4 times 40 is 160.

3rd: 4 × 40 = 160

So the shares are 80, 120 and 160.

80, 120 and 160

5 Check

Let's check.

The shares add up: 80 plus 120 plus 160 is 360.

80 + 120 + 160 = 360

And divided by 40, they give 2 to 3 to 4 again.

So the answer is right!

80 : 120 : 160 → ÷ 40 → 2 : 3 : 4

Let's look back.

First: count the parts.

Then: draw the bar.

Then: find one part.

Then: find each share.

Last: check.
