Step by step

The question

Question: simplify this fraction.

On top: 4 − 1/2.

At the bottom: 1 + 3/4.

A fraction with fractions inside is called a complex fraction.

4 − 121 + 34

1 Find the common bottom

The small fractions have bottoms 2 and 4.

The smallest thing they all go into is 4.

4 is in the 2 times table.

small bottoms: 2, 4
common bottom: 4

Careful!

We multiply EVERY part by 4, also the part with no small bottom.

Leaving it out is the usual mistake.

Careful: every part times 4, the whole number too

2 Times 4 on top and bottom

4/4 is 1.

Times 1 does not change the value.

44 = 1

We multiply the top and the bottom by 4.

Then the small fractions go away.

= 4 × (4 − 12)4 × (1 + 34)

3 Multiply every part

Every part times 4.

4 times 4 is 16.

4 times 1/2: the bottom 2 goes into 4, so we get 2.

4 × 4 = 16
4 × (−12) = −2
4 × 1 = 4
4 × 34 = 3

So we get (16 − 2)/(4 + 3).

No more small fractions!

= 16 − 24 + 3

Like terms go together: 14/7.

= 147

4 Simplify

Every part, on the top and the bottom, can be divided by 7.

So we divide the top and the bottom by it.

÷ 7: 14 → 2
÷ 7: 7 → 1

So the answer is 2.

= 2

5 Check

Let's check the long way: work out the top and the bottom first.

The top is 7/2, the bottom is 7/4.

top: 82 − 12 = 72, bottom: 44 + 34 = 74

Then top divided by bottom: times the flip.

We get 2 again.

It works!

72 ÷ 74 = 72 × 47 = 2

Let's look back.

First: find the common bottom.

Then: times 4 on top and bottom.

Then: multiply every part.

Then: simplify.

Last: check.

Answer
= 2

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

simplify (5 − 12) ÷ (1 + 12)
Show the answer
3
