Step by step

The question

Question: solve 6(x − 2) = 2x + 8.

6(x − 2) = 2x + 8

Let's find x.

1 Open the brackets

The 6 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 6 times each part.

6 × x + 6 × (−2) = 2x + 8

Plus times minus is minus.

+ × − = −

6 times x is 6x.

6 times (−2) is −12.

6x − 12 = 2x + 8

2 Get x on one side

There is x on both sides.

We want x on one side only.

The numbers in front of x are 2 and 6.

We remove the smaller one, 2x, so the x part that is left is plus.

So we remove the 2x from the right side.

To remove 2x, we take away 2x.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

6x − 12 − 2x = 2x + 8 − 2x

2x and − 2x cancel each other.

They make zero.

6x − 2x = 4x.

6x − 2x = 4x

Now we have 4x − 12 = 8.

4x − 12 = 8

We want x by itself.

First we remove the − 12, so 4x is alone.

Then we remove the times 4.

So after step 2: we took away 2x, and now we have 4x − 12 = 8.

← step 2: took away 2x

Is x alone now?

Not yet: − 12 is still with x.

How do we remove it?

3 Remove the − 12

To remove − 12, we add 12.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

4x − 12 + 12 = 8 + 12

− 12 and + 12 cancel each other.

They make zero.

8 + 12 = 20.

8 + 12 = 20

Now we have 4x = 20.

4x = 20

So after step 3: we added 12, and now we have 4x = 20.

← step 3: added 12

Is x alone now?

Not yet: 4x means 4 times x.

4 Remove the 4

To remove times 4, we divide by 4.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

4x4 = 204

4 divided by 4 is 1.

They cancel each other.

So just x is left.

20 divided by 4 is 5.

204 = 5

So x = 5!

x = 5

5 Check

Let's check: put 5 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 6(5 − 2) = 6(3) = 18

Now the right side.

Right: 2(5) + 8 = 10 + 8 = 18

Both sides are 18.

So x = 5 is right!

Both sides equal 18

Let's look back.

First: open the brackets.

Then: get x on one side.

Then: remove the − 12.

Then: remove the 4.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 5

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:
