Solve sin(5x + 4)° = cos(3x - 2)°

Step by step, with the reason for every step · sin of one angle = cos of the other · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: find x.

sin(5x + 4)° = cos(3x − 2)°.

Both angles are between 0 and 90.

sin(5x + 4)° = cos(3x − 2)° (angles between 0° and 90°)

1 Draw the triangle

sin and cos come from the sides of a right triangle.

So we draw one, with the angle (5x + 4)° at the bottom.

The other small angle is at the top.

We call it y.

2 The two small angles

The three angles of a triangle add up to 180°.

The right angle takes 90°.

180 minus 90 is 90.

180 − 90 = 90

So the two small angles share 90°.

angles of a triangle: 180°
two small angles: 90°

So 5x + 4 + y = 90.

5x + 4 + y = 90

3 Name the sides from each angle

Look at side a.

From the (5x + 4)° angle, it is across: the opposite side.

We write opp, adj and hyp for short.

From the top angle, the same side a is next to it: the adjacent side.

Side c is the hypotenuse for both angles.

It is across from the right angle.

sin is the opposite side over the hypotenuse.

From (5x + 4)°: a over c.

sin(5x + 4)° = opphyp = ac

cos is the adjacent side over the hypotenuse.

From the top angle: a/c too.

cos y° = adjhyp = ac

Same two sides, same fraction.

So sin (5x + 4)° = cos y°.

sin(5x + 4)° = cos y°

This works in every right triangle.

The sin of one small angle is the cos of the other.

Together they make 90°.

sin A° = cos(90 − A)°

4 Write the equation

The question says sin(5x + 4)° = cos(3x − 2)°.

We found sin(5x + 4)° = cos y°.

Between 0° and 90°, each angle has its own cos.

So y = 3x − 2.

y = 3x − 2

In 5x + 4 + y = 90, put 3x − 2 in place of y: 5x + 4 + (3x − 2) = 90.

5x + 4 + (3x − 2) = 90

Careful!

The two angles are not equal.

sin and cos are different.

The angles add up to 90.

Careful: not 5x + 4 = 3x − 2 ✗

A plus in front of a bracket: we can just drop the bracket.

5x + 4 + 3x − 2 = 90

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

Plain numbers go together.

5x + 3x = 8x.

4 − 2 = 2.

5x + 3x = 8x
4 − 2 = 2

Now we have 8x + 2 = 90.

8x + 2 = 90

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 8 and + 2.

First x was times 8.

Then + 2.

To take them off, we go backwards.

First we remove the + 2.

Then the times 8.

x → × 8 → + 2
take off: − 2, then ÷ 8

6 Remove the + 2

To remove + 2, we take away 2.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

8x + 2 − 2 = 90 − 2

+ 2 and − 2 make zero.

Cross them out.

90 − 2 = 88.

90 − 2 = 88

Now we have 8x = 88.

8x = 88

7 Remove the 8

8x means 8 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 8, we divide by 8.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

8x8 = 888

8 divided by 8 is 1.

So just x is left.

88 divided by 8 is 11.

888 = 11

So x = 11!

x = 11

8 Check

Let's check: put x = 11 in the angles.

5x + 4 is 59.

5x + 4 = 5 × 11 + 4 = 59

3x − 2 is 31.

3x − 2 = 3 × 11 − 2 = 31

Now with the calculator.

Set the calculator to degrees first.

sin 59° is about 0.8572.

sin 59° ≈ 0.8572

cos 31° is about 0.8572 too.

cos 31° ≈ 0.8572

They are the same.

So x = 11 is right!

Let's look back.

First: draw the triangle.

Then: the two small angles.

Then: name the sides from each angle.

Then: write the equation.

Then: group like terms.

Then: remove the + 2.

Then: remove the 8.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 11

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

sin(12x + 9)° = cos(5x − 4)° (angles between 0° and 90°)
Show the answer
x = 5
