Step by step

The question

Question: make a stem-and-leaf plot of 67, 54, 72, 61, 58, 75, 63, 69, 70, 57 and 66.

Find the median.

67, 54, 72, 61, 58, 75, 63, 69, 70, 57, 66

1 Split the numbers

The tens digit is the stem.

The ones digit is the leaf.

67: stem 6, leaf 7.

67: stem 6, leaf 7

Careful!

Every plot needs a key.

6, line, 7 means 67, not 13.

Careful: key: 6 | 7 means 67

2 Write the leaves

The stems go down the side: 5, 6 and 7.

67: leaf 7 goes after stem 6.

We cross out 67.

54: leaf 4 after stem 5.

And so on, in the order they come.

3 Put the leaves in order

Now we write the plot again, with each row of leaves in order, smallest first.

Stem 5: 4, 7 and 8.

And the key: 6, line, 7 means 67.

key: 6 | 7 = 67

4 Read the plot

The leaves are in order now.

We cross out the smallest and the biggest.

And the next pair, and so on.

One leaf is left in the middle: it is 66.

So the median is 66.

median = 66

5 Check

Let's check: the plot has 11 leaves, one for each of the 11 numbers.

So none is lost!

3 + 5 + 3 = 11 leaves = 11 numbers

Let's look back.

First: split the numbers.

Then: write the leaves.

Then: put the leaves in order.

Then: read the plot.

Last: check.

Answer
median = 66
