Step by step

The question

Question: work out the sum for k = 1 to 4 of k².

Σk = 14k2

1 Read the sigma

Σ is the Greek letter sigma.

It means: add up.

Start with k = 1, and stop at k = 4.

That is 4 − 1 + 1: 4 terms.

For each k we work out k².

Σ = add up
start: k = 1, stop: k = 4
4 − 1 + 1 = 4 terms

2 Write the terms

k = 1: we put 1 in place of k.

We get 1.

k = 1: 12 = 1

k = 2 gives 4.

k = 2: 22 = 4
k = 3: 32 = 9

And k = 4 gives 16.

That is the last one.

k = 4: 42 = 16

3 Add them

Now we add the 4 terms.

Σk = 14k2 = 1 + 4 + 9 + 16

So the sum is 30.

= 30

4 Check

Let's check: we add them again, backwards.

Backwards: 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30

We get 30 again.

It works!

Let's look back.

First: read the sigma.

Then: write the terms.

Then: add them.

Last: check.

Answer
= 30

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

work out Σk = 13k2
