Step by step

The question

Question: find the surface area when y = √(9 − x²), from x = −3 to x = 3, turns around the x-axis.

y = √9 − x2

1 The idea

Draw the curve.

Cut the skin into thin bands.

A band goes around a circle of radius f(x): it is 2π f(x) long.

Its width is a tiny piece of the curve, ds, from the arc length lesson.

Not dx: the curve is slanted.

band = 2π f(x) × ds

Add up all the bands: ds is the root of 1 plus f′ squared, times dx.

S = ∫ from −3 to 3 of 2π f(x)√1 + (f′(x))2 dx

2 Find f′(x)

The chain rule: the root's derivative is 1/2 roots, times the inside's slope, −2x.

The 2s cancel.

f′(x) = −x√9 − x2

3 Under the root

Square it: x² over 9 − x².

1 + (f′(x))2 = 1 + x29 − x2

Over one bottom: the x²'s cancel on top, 9 is left.

= 99 − x2

Careful!

Not dx!

The band is slanted: its width is ds, the root of 1 plus f′ squared, times dx.

Careful: not S = ∫ from −3 to 3 of 2π f(x) dx ✗

4 Integrate

f(x) times the root: the root of 9 is 3, and the root of 9 − x² cancels.

S = 2π∫ from −3 to 3 of √9 − x2 × 3√9 − x2

Only 2π times 3 is left: a number!

= 2π × 3∫ from −3 to 3 of dx

A number's integral is the number times the width.

= 6π × (3 − −3)

So the surface area is 36π square units.

That is about 113.10.

S = 36π ≈ 113.10

5 Check

Let's check: a whole sphere of radius 3.

Its surface is 4π r squared: 36π.

The same.

Right!

sphere: 4π r² = 4π × 3² = 36π

Let's look back.

First: the idea.

Then: find f′(x).

Then: under the root.

Then: integrate.

Last: check.

Answer
S = 36π ≈ 113.10

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find the surface area when y = √4 − x2
Show the answer
S = 16π
