The question

Question: write with math signs: the sum of a number and 3, divided by 2.

the sum of a number and 3, divided by 2

1 Change words to math

We don't know the number, so we call it n.

Sum means add.

So the sum of a number and 3 is n + 3.

n + 3

Divided by means divide.

÷

2 stays 2.

2

2 Put it in order

Divide is written as a fraction: top over bottom.

So we get (n + 3)/2.

n + 32

3 Check

Let's check with a number.

Any number will do.

With 10 we would get a fraction.

With 5 we get a whole number.

Say the number is 5.

The sum of 5 and 3 is 8.

the sum of 5 and 3 is 8

8 divided by 2 is 4.

8 divided by 2 is 4

And (5 + 3)/2 is 4 too.

So (n + 3)/2 is right!

5 + 32 = 82 = 4

Let's look back.

First: change words to math.

Then: put it in order.

Last: check.
