Triangle A = 25°, B = 110°, c = 8, find b

Step by step, with the reason for every step · The law of sines · Trigonometry

Step by step

The question

Question: find side b of the triangle with A = 25°, B = 110° and c = 8.

1 Match sides and angles

Each side has a partner: the angle across from it.

Side c is across from angle C.

Side b, the one we want, is across from angle B.

2 Find the third angle

We need angle C.

The angles of a triangle add to 180°.

So C is 180° take away the other two.

C = 180° − 25° − 110°

So C = 45°.

C = 45°

3 Write the law of sines

In every triangle, a side over the sine of its partner angle gives the same number, for all three pairs.

We use the pair we want and the pair we know: b over sin B = c over sin C.

bsin B = csin C

Careful!

Each side goes with the angle across from it, never with an angle next to it.

Careful: each side with the angle across from it

4 Put the numbers in

Now put the numbers in: B = 110°, c = 8 and C = 45°.

bsin 110° = 8sin 45°

5 Find b

b is on top, over sin 110°.

To remove the sin 110° at the bottom, we multiply by sin 110°.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

sin 110° × bsin 110° = sin 110° × 8sin 45°

sin 110° over sin 110° is 1.

So just b is left.

So b = 8 × sin 110° over sin 45°.

b = 8 × sin 110°sin 45°

The calculator gives sin 110°: about 0.9397.

And sin 45°: about 0.7071.

sin 110° ≈ 0.9397
sin 45° ≈ 0.7071

Put the numbers in.

b ≈ 8 × 0.93970.7071

That is about 10.631.

To the nearest tenth, b ≈ 10.6.

b ≈ 10.6

6 Check

Let's check: both pairs must give the same number.

b over sin 110° is about 11.28.

bsin 110° ≈ 10.60.9397 ≈ 11.28

c over sin 45° is about 11.31.

Almost the same: the gap is only from rounding.

csin 45° ≈ 80.7071 ≈ 11.31

And the bigger angle has the bigger side: 110° is more than 45°, and 10.6 is more than 8.

So it is right!

B > C, so b > c

Let's look back.

First: match sides and angles.

Then: find the third angle.

Then: write the law of sines.

Then: put the numbers in.

Then: find b.

Last: check.

Answer
b ≈ 10.6

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

A = 50°, B = 40°, c = 11: find b
Show the answer
b ≈ 7.1
