Step by step

The question

Question: find the volume when the region between y = 5 and y = x² + 1 turns around the x-axis.

y = 5
y = x2 + 1

1 Draw and turn it

Draw the curves first.

2 Where they meet

The region ends where the curves meet: where the two y's are equal.

Move everything to one side.

5 = x2 + 1

Times −1 on both sides: every sign changes, and 0 stays 0.

Now x² comes first with a plus.

x2 − 4 = 0

Factor it.

x² − 4 is a difference of two squares: x² minus 2 squared.

So it is (x − 2)(x + 2).

(x + 2)(x − 2) = 0

A product is 0 when one of its parts is 0.

So x = −2 or x = 2.

x = −2 or x = 2

The region between them, from x = −2 to x = 2, is shaded.

3 One slice

Cut the solid into thin slices.

Each slice is a washer: a flat disk with a hole.

The outside radius is the curve further from the axis: R = 5.

R = 5

The inside radius, the hole, is the other one: r = x² + 1.

r = x2 + 1

A washer is the big circle minus the hole: π R² minus π r², times its thickness dx.

slice = π(R2 − r2) dx

Which curve is outside?

Test a number between: 5 is bigger there.

test x = 0.5: 5 > 1.25

4 Write the integral

Add up all the slices from −2 to 2: that is an integral.

π is just a number, so it waits in front.

V = π∫ from −2 to 2 of (52 − (x2 + 1)2) dx

Careful!

Not R minus r, squared!

The hole is a whole circle: take away π r squared.

Careful: not π(R − r)2 ✗

5 Square it

Square both radii, then take away.

V = π∫ from −2 to 2 of (24 − x4 − 2x2) dx

Square the number and the power: 25.

52 = 25

And the hole: x⁴ + 2x² + 1.

(x2 + 1)2 = (x2 + 1)(x2 + 1)
= x4 + 2x2 + 1

6 The antiderivative

The antiderivative: add 1 to each power, divide by the new power.

V = π[ 24x − x55 − 2x33 ] from −2 to 2

7 Top minus bottom

Put in 2, then take away the same with −2.

= π[(24(2) − 255 − 2(2)33) − (24(−2) − (−2)55 − 2(−2)33)]
= π[54415 − (−54415)]

So the volume is 1088π over 15 cubic units.

That is about 227.87.

V = 1088π15 ≈ 227.87

8 Check

Let's check with a calculator: it adds up 1000 thin washers.

That gives about 227.87, the same as our answer.

Right!

1000 thin washers: ≈ 227.87

Let's look back.

First: draw and turn it.

Then: where they meet.

Then: one slice.

Then: write the integral.

Then: square it.

Then: the antiderivative.

Then: top minus bottom.

Last: check.

Answer
V = 1088π15 ≈ 227.87

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find the volume when the region between y = 1
Show the answer
V = 8π5 ≈ 5.03
