What is the limit of (ln x)/(x - 1) as x approaches 1?

Step by step, with the reason for every step · AP Calculus BC Practice Exam 1 · AP Calculus BC

Step by step

The question

Question: find the limit as x → 1 of ln x/(x − 1).

lim x → 1 ln xx − 1

There are four choices.

First we solve it, the normal way.

Then we pick.

1 Put the number in

Put 1 in place of x.

The top is 0, and the bottom is 0.

top: ln 1 = 0
bottom: 1 − 1 = 0

0/0 has no value.

It tells us nothing yet.

This is where L'Hôpital's rule helps.

form 00

2 Use L'Hôpital's rule

The rule: when we get 0/0, or infinity over infinity, we may take the derivative of the top, and the derivative of the bottom.

The new limit is the same.

lim x → a f(x)g(x) = lim x → a f′(x)g′(x)

Careful!

This is not the quotient rule.

The top gets its own derivative, and the bottom gets its own derivative.

Careful: not the quotient rule: top and bottom each alone

The derivative of the top is 1 over x.

The derivative of the bottom is 1.

The new limit is the same.

lim x → 1 ln xx − 1 = lim x → 1 1x1

There is a small fraction inside.

Times the top and the bottom by x, so it goes away.

= lim x → 1 1x

3 Put the number in again

Put 1 in again.

Now the bottom is not 0.

So the limit is 1.

= 11 = 1NaNNaN = 1

4 Check

Let's check with a calculator, with x very close to 1.

x = 0.99 gives about 1.005.

x = 0.99: ln xx − 1 ≈ 1.005

And x = 1.01 gives about 0.995.

Both are close to 1.

Right!

x = 1.01: ln xx − 1 ≈ 0.995

5 Pick the choice

Our answer is 1.

That is choice B.

B) 1

6 Why not the others

A is 0.

Wrong: ln 1 is 0, but the bottom is 0 too.

A) 0 ✗ ln 1 is 0, but the bottom is 0 too

C is −1.

Wrong: the derivative of ln x is 1/x, with no minus.

C) −1 ✗ the derivative of ln x is 1/x, with no minus

D is infinity.

Wrong: 0/0: use L'Hôpital's rule.

D) infinity ✗ 0 over 0: use L'Hôpital's rule

Let's look back.

First: put the number in.

Then: use L'Hôpital's rule.

Then: put the number in again.

Then: check.

Then: pick the choice.

Last: why not the others.

Answer
= 11 = 1NaNNaN = 1

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:
