Step by step

The question

Question: work out 0.4 × 0.3.

0.4 × 0.3

1 Multiply

Now we forget the points and multiply: 4 × 3 = 12.

4 × 3 = 12

Now we put the point back.

0.4 has 1 digit after the point.

0.3 has 1 digit after the point.

Together: 1 + 1 = 2.

So the answer has 2 digits after the point.

1 + 1 = 2

We start at the end of 12.

The point jumps 2 places to the left: 0.12.

12 → 0.12

So we get 0.12.

= 0.12
Answer
= 0.12
