Write 2x + 2y = 8 as y = mx + b

Step by step, with the reason for every step · Write Ax + By = C as y = mx + b · Algebra 1

Step by step

The question

Question: write 2x + 2y = 8 as y = mx + b.

2x + 2y = 8

We want y by itself.

Then we can read m and b.

y = mx + b

1 Remove the 2x

We want y by itself.

The 2x is in the way.

To remove 2x, we take away 2x.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

2x + 2y − 2x = 8 − 2x

2x and − 2x make zero.

Cross them out.

Write what is left.

8 and − 2x are not like terms.

They stay as they are.

2y = 8 − 2x

We write the x part first, like in y = mx + b.

Each part keeps its sign.

2y = −2x + 8

2 Remove the 2

2y means 2 times y.

We want just y.

To remove times 2, we divide by 2.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

2y2 = −2x + 82

2 divided by 2 is 1.

So just y is left.

The 2 divides the whole right side.

So it divides every part: −2x and 8.

Each part keeps its sign on top.

y = −2x2 + 82

Careful!

Divide every part by 2, not only the number.

−2x must be divided by 2 too.

Careful: not y = −2x + 4 ✗

Minus over plus is minus.

−2x divided by 2 is −x.

−2x2 = −x

8 divided by 2 is 4.

82 = 4

So y = −x + 4.

y = −x + 4

3 Read m and b

m is the number in front of x: −1.

It is the slope.

m = −1
slope

b is the number on its own: 4.

The line crosses the y-axis at 4.

That point is called the y-intercept.

b = 4
crosses the y-axis

4 Check

Let's check with a point.

Put x = 1 into y = −x + 4.

We get y = 3.

y = −1 + 4 = 3

Now put x = 1 and y = 3 into 2x + 2y.

2(1) + 2(3) = 2 + 6 = 8

We get 8, the same as the right side.

So the new equation is right!

Let's look back.

First: remove the 2x.

Then: remove the 2.

Then: read m and b.

Last: check.

Answer
y = −x + 4

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Write 3x + 3y = 9
Show the answer
y = −x + 3
