Step by step

The question

Question: find the derivative of f(x) = 2 x³ − 5 x² + 4x.

f(x) = 2x3 − 5x2 + 4x

1 The rule

d/dx means: the derivative of.

Here, of x to the power n.

The rule: the power n comes down in front, and the new power is n − 1.

ddxxn = nxn − 1

We write the derivative as f′(x), "f prime of x".

f′(x): the derivative of f(x)

2 Each term

First: 2 x³.

Its power is 3.

The power comes down in front: 2 times 3.

And the new power is 3 − 1.

2x3 → 2 × 3x^(3 − 1)

3 − 1 is 2.

3 − 1 = 2

2 times 3 is 6.

So 2 x³ gives 6 x².

= 6x2

Next: −5 x².

Its power is 2.

The power comes down in front: 5 times 2.

And the new power is 2 − 1.

−5x2 → −5 × 2x^(2 − 1)

2 − 1 is 1.

2 − 1 = 1

5 times 2 is 10.

So −5 x² gives −10x.

= −10x

Last: 4x.

x alone gives 1: its graph goes up 1 for each 1 across, so its slope is 1.

4x → 4 × 1

4 times 1 is 4.

= 4

Careful!

The power must go down by 1 too.

Careful: not 2x3 → 6x3 ✗

We put the terms together: f′(x) = 6 x² − 10x + 4.

f′(x) = 6x2 − 10x + 4

3 Check

Let's check: the derivative is the slope.

At x = 1, the rule gives 0.

f′(1) = 6 − 10 + 4 = 0

Now the slope between two very close points: x = 1 and x = 1.001.

A calculator gives about 0.

Very close to 0.

Right!

f(1.001) − f(1)0.001 ≈ 0

Let's look back.

First: the rule.

Then: each term.

Last: check.

Answer
f′(x) = 6x2 − 10x + 4

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Find the derivative of f(x) = 3x3 − 5x2 + 3x
Show the answer
f′(x) = 9x2 − 10x + 3
