Step by step

The question

Question: Adult tickets cost €14 and child tickets cost €7.

A museum sold 8 more child tickets than adult tickets.

It made €476.

How many of each ticket did it sell?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

Two kinds: adult tickets cost €14 each, child tickets cost €7 each.

There are 8 more child tickets than adult tickets.

All the money: €476.

What do we want?

How many adult tickets, and how many child tickets.

2 Name the unknown

We know the child tickets from the adult tickets.

So we start with the adult tickets.

We call how many there are x.

x = adult tickets

8 more: x + 8.

x + 8 = child tickets

Careful!

There are 8 more child tickets than adult tickets.

So the + 8 goes with the child tickets, not the adult tickets.

Careful: not x + 8 = adult tickets ✗

Let's put it in a table: how many, the price, and the money.

Adult tickets: x of them, €14 each.

Child tickets: x + 8 of them, €7 each.

Money = how many times the price.

14 times x is 14x.

7 times all of x + 8 is 7(x + 8).

We keep x + 8 together in brackets.

The total: €476 in all.

3 Write the equation

In words: the adult money plus the child money makes all the money.

14x + 7(x + 8) = 476

So the equation is 14x + 7(x + 8) = 476.

Now we solve it.

14x + 7(x + 8) = 476

4 Open the brackets

The 7 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 7 times each part.

14x + 7 × x + 7 × 8 = 476

Work out each multiplication.

14x + 7x + 56 = 476

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

14x + 7x = 21x.

14x + 7x = 21x

Now we have 21x + 56 = 476.

21x + 56 = 476

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 21 and + 56.

The + 56 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 21.

6 Remove the + 56

To remove + 56, we take away 56.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

21x + 56 − 56 = 476 − 56

+ 56 and − 56 make zero.

Cross them out.

476 − 56 = 420.

476 − 56 = 420

Now we have 21x = 420.

21x = 420

7 Remove the 21

21x means 21 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 21, we divide by 21.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

21x21 = 42021

21 divided by 21 is 1.

So just x is left.

420 divided by 21 is 20.

42021 = 20

So x = 20!

x = 20

8 Answer the question

Child tickets: x + 8.

20 + 8 = 28.

x + 8 = 20 + 8 = 28

So 20 adult tickets and 28 child tickets.

9 Check

Let's check in the story.

28 is 8 more than 20, like the story says.

28 − 20 = 8

The money: €280 plus €196 makes €476, like the story says.

20 × €14 + 28 × €7 = €280 + €196 = €476

Does it make sense?

Both are whole numbers, not below 0.

That fits tickets.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: 20 and 28: whole, 0 or more

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.
