Step by step

The question

Question: Adult tickets cost $10 and child tickets cost $5.

A cinema sold 6 more child tickets than adult tickets.

It made $30.

How many of each ticket did it sell?

1 Find what we know

What do we know?

Two kinds: adult tickets cost $10 each, child tickets cost $5 each.

There are 6 more child tickets than adult tickets.

All the money: $30.

What do we want?

How many adult tickets, and how many child tickets.

2 Name the unknown

We know the child tickets from the adult tickets.

So we start with the adult tickets.

We call how many there are x.

x = adult tickets

6 more: x + 6.

x + 6 = child tickets

Careful!

There are 6 more child tickets than adult tickets.

So the + 6 goes with the child tickets, not the adult tickets.

Careful: not x + 6 = adult tickets ✗

Let's put it in a table: how many, the price, and the money.

Adult tickets: x of them, $10 each.

Child tickets: x + 6 of them, $5 each.

Money = how many times the price.

10 times x is 10x.

5 times all of x + 6 is 5(x + 6).

We keep x + 6 together in brackets.

The total: $30 in all.

3 Write the equation

In words: the adult money plus the child money makes all the money.

10x + 5(x + 6) = 30

So the equation is 10x + 5(x + 6) = 30.

Now we solve it.

10x + 5(x + 6) = 30

4 Open the brackets

The 5 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

So we write 5 times each part.

10x + 5 × x + 5 × 6 = 30

Work out each multiplication.

10x + 5x + 30 = 30

5 Group like terms

Terms are the parts between the + and − signs.

Like terms are the same kind: same letters, same powers.

All the x terms go together.

10x + 5x = 15x.

10x + 5x = 15x

Now we have 15x + 30 = 30.

15x + 30 = 30

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 15 and + 30.

The + 30 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 15.

6 Remove the + 30

To remove + 30, we take away 30.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

15x + 30 − 30 = 30 − 30

+ 30 and − 30 make zero.

Cross them out.

30 − 30 = 0.

30 − 30 = 0

Now we have 15x = 0.

15x = 0

7 Remove the 15

15x means 15 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 15, we divide by 15.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

15x15 = 015

15 divided by 15 is 1.

So just x is left.

0 divided by 15 is 0.

015 = 0

So x = 0!

x = 0

8 Answer the question

Child tickets: x + 6.

0 + 6 = 6.

x + 6 = 0 + 6 = 6

So 0 adult tickets and 6 child tickets.

9 Check

Let's check in the story.

6 is 6 more than 0, like the story says.

6 − 0 = 6

The money: $0 plus $30 makes $30, like the story says.

0 × $10 + 6 × $5 = $0 + $30 = $30

Does it make sense?

Both are whole numbers, not below 0.

That fits tickets.

So the answer is right!

makes sense: 0 and 6: whole, 0 or more

Let's look back.

First: find what we know.

Then: name the unknown.

Then: write the equation.

Then: solve it.

Then: answer the question.

Last: check.
