Step by step

The question

Question: find x.

C and D are on the same side of AB.

The angles at C and D are 3x − 15 and 60°.

1 Use the circle rule

The line AB cuts the circle into two parts, called segments.

C and D are in the same part.

Both angles stand on the same arc: the orange part, from A to B.

Look at the angle at the center on that arc.

The circle rule says it is double each of them.

Both angles are half of the same angle.

So they are equal.

So the two angles are equal: 3x − 15 = 60.

3x − 15 = 60

We want x by itself.

Two things are stuck to x: times 3 and − 15.

The − 15 is on the outside, so it comes off first.

Then the times 3.

2 Remove the − 15

To remove − 15, we add 15.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

3x − 15 + 15 = 60 + 15

− 15 and + 15 make zero.

Cross them out.

60 + 15 = 75.

60 + 15 = 75

Now we have 3x = 75.

3x = 75

3 Remove the 3

3x means 3 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 3, we divide by 3.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

3x3 = 753

3 divided by 3 is 1.

So just x is left.

75 divided by 3 is 25.

753 = 25

So x = 25!

x = 25

4 Check

Let's check: put x = 25 in each angle.

3x − 15 = 3 × 25 − 15 = 60

We get 60°, the same as the other angle.

So x = 25 is right!

Let's look back.

First: use the circle rule.

Then: remove the − 15.

Then: remove the 3.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 25
