Step by step

The question

Question: find the center and the radius of x² + y² − 8x + 2y + 8 = 0.

x2 + y2 − 8x + 2y + 8 = 0

1 Group x and y

Put the x terms together in a bracket, and the y terms together.

(x2 − 8x) + (y2 + 2y) + 8 = 0

2 Remove the + 8

We want only the x and y groups on the left.

To remove + 8, we take away 8.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

(x2 − 8x) + (y2 + 2y) + 8 − 8 = 0 − 8

+ 8 and − 8 make zero.

Cross them out.

0 minus 8 is −8.

(x2 − 8x) + (y2 + 2y) = −8

3 Complete the square for x

To make x² − 8x a full square: half of −8 is −4.

(−4) times (−4) is 16.

So we add 16.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

(x2 − 8x + 16) + (y2 + 2y) = −8 + 16
−8 ÷ 2 = −4, (−4) × (−4) = 16

Careful!

What we add on the left, we add on the right too.

Then the two sides stay equal.

Careful: add 16 on both sides

4 Complete the square for y

To make y² + 2y a full square: half of 2 is 1.

1 times 1 is 1.

So we add 1.

We do it on both sides, so they stay equal.

(x2 − 8x + 16) + (y2 + 2y + 1) = −8 + 16 + 1
2 ÷ 2 = 1, 1 × 1 = 1

5 Write as squares

Each bracket is now a full square.

On the right, −8 + 16 + 1 is 9.

So (x − 4)² + (y + 1)² = 9.

(x − 4)2 + (y + 1)2 = 9

x² − 8x + 16 is (x − 4)².

y² + 2y + 1 is (y + 1)².

x² − 8x + 16 = (x − 4)2
y² + 2y + 1 = (y + 1)2

6 Read the center and radius

Compare with the circle rule: (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r².

(x − h)2 + (y − k)2 = r2

The signs turn: x − 4 gives h = 4.

y + 1 gives k = −1.

x − 4 → h = 4
y + 1 → k = −1

So the center is (4, −1).

center = (4, −1)

r² is 9.

So r is the square root of 9: 3, because 3 times 3 is 9.

r = √9 = 3

So the center is (4, −1) and the radius is 3.

center (4, −1) and r = 3

7 Check

Let's check with a point on the circle: (7, −1), 3 to the right from the center.

Put it in the first equation.

7² + (−1)² − 8 × 7 + 2 × (−1) + 8
= 49 + 1 − 56 − 2 + 8 = 0

We get 0, the same as the right side.

So the center and the radius are right!

Let's look back.

First: group x and y.

Then: remove the + 8.

Then: complete the square for x.

Then: complete the square for y.

Then: write as squares.

Then: read the center and radius.

Last: check.
