Step by step

The question

Question: find sin A, when cos A = 24/25.

cos A = 2425 sin A = ?

1 Draw the triangle

sin, cos and tan belong to an angle of a right triangle.

So we draw a right triangle with the angle A.

2 Use what cos A means

The opposite side is across from A.

We write opp, adj and hyp for short.

The adjacent side is next to A.

It is not the hypotenuse.

The hypotenuse is the longest side.

It is across from the right angle.

cos A is the adjacent side over the hypotenuse.

cos A = adjhyp

The question says cos A = 24/25.

So adj over hyp is 24/25.

adjhyp = 2425

Every right triangle with the angle A has the same shape.

A bigger one could have 48 and 50.

48/50 is 24/25 too.

4850 = 2425

So we can use the small one: adj = 24 and hyp = 25.

3 Find the missing side

The opposite side is missing.

We call it x.

Pythagoras: in a right triangle, the two short sides squared add up to the hypotenuse squared.

opp2 + adj2 = hyp2

Now put the numbers in: opp = x, adj = 24 and hyp = 25.

x2 + 242 = 252

24² means 24 times 24.

That is 576.

242 = 24 × 24 = 576

25² means 25 times 25.

That is 625.

252 = 25 × 25 = 625

Write the squares: x² + 576 = 625.

x2 + 576 = 625

We want x² by itself.

The 576 is in the way.

To remove 576, we take away 576.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

x2 + 576 − 576 = 625 − 576

576 and − 576 make zero.

Cross them out.

625 minus 576 is 49.

x2 = 49

x² is 49.

So x times x is 49.

That means x is the square root of 49.

x = √49

The square root of 49 is the plus number that times itself makes 49.

7 times 7 is 49.

−7 times −7 is 49 too, but the √ sign always means the plus one.

7 × 7 = 49

So x = 7.

x = 7

Careful!

We cannot just take away the sides.

Pythagoras works with the squares: 625 − 576 = 49.

Then the square root.

Careful: not x = 25 − 24 = 1 ✗

4 Write sin A

sin A is the opposite side over the hypotenuse.

sin A = opphyp

Put in opp = 7 and hyp = 25.

So sin A = 7/25.

sin A = 725

5 Check

Let's check with the calculator.

Set the calculator to degrees first.

The cos⁻¹ button turns cos A back into the angle: A is about 16.3°.

A = cos−1(24/25) ≈ 16.3°

sin 16.3° is about 0.28.

sin 16.3° ≈ 0.28

And 7/25 is 0.28.

725 = 0.28

The same.

So sin A = 7/25 is right!

Let's look back.

First: draw the triangle.

Then: use what cos A means.

Then: find the missing side.

Then: write sin A.

Last: check.

Answer
sin A = 725

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:
