DE ∥ BC, AD = 8, AB = 12, AE = 10, find AC

Step by step, with the reason for every step · A line parallel to a side · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: D E is parallel to B C, with AD = 8, AE = 10, AB = 12: find AC.

1 Use the parallel line

D E is parallel to B C: the arrows show it.

So triangle A D E has the same angles as A B C: they are similar.

The small triangle is the big one made smaller: every side by the same scale.

2 Write the proportion

So: AD over AB equals AE over AC.

ADAB = AEAC

Careful!

Keep the same order on both sides: the matching parts on top, the matching parts at the bottom.

Careful: not ADAB = ACAE ✗

Put the numbers in.

We call AC x: 8/12 = 10 over x.

812 = 10x

3 Cross multiply

When two fractions are equal, we can cross multiply.

These two are equal.

8 × x = 10 × 12

Work out the multiplications.

8x = 120

4 Remove the 8

8x means 8 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 8, we divide by 8.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

8x8 = 1208

8 divided by 8 is 1.

So just x is left.

120 divided by 8 is 15.

1208 = 15

So x = 15!

x = 15

5 Check

Let's check: put 15 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 812 = 8÷412÷4 = 23

Now the right side.

Right: 1015 = 10÷515÷5 = 23

Both sides are 2/3.

So x = 15 is right!

Both sides equal 23

So AC = 15.

Let's look back.

First: use the parallel line.

Then: write the proportion.

Then: cross multiply.

Then: remove the 8.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 15

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check:

Find AC.
