DE ∥ BC, DE = 6, BC = 15, AD = 4, find AB

Step by step, with the reason for every step · A line parallel to a side · Geometry

Step by step

The question

Question: D E is parallel to B C, with AD = 4, DE = 6, BC = 15: find AB.

1 Use the parallel line

D E is parallel to B C: the arrows show it.

So triangle A D E has the same angles as A B C: they are similar.

The small triangle is the big one made smaller: every side by the same scale.

2 Write the proportion

So: AD over AB equals DE over BC.

ADAB = DEBC

Careful!

Keep the same order on both sides: the matching parts on top, the matching parts at the bottom.

Careful: not ADAB = BCDE ✗

Put the numbers in.

We call AB x: 4/x = 6/15.

4x = 615

3 Cross multiply

When two fractions are equal, we can cross multiply.

These two are equal.

4 × 15 = 6 × x

Work out the multiplications.

60 = 6x

Let's swap the two sides, so x is on the left.

6x = 60

4 Remove the 6

6x means 6 times x.

We want just x.

To remove times 6, we divide by 6.

We do it on both sides.

Why both sides?

The = sign means both sides are the same amount.

If we change only one side, they are not the same any more.

6x6 = 606

6 divided by 6 is 1.

So just x is left.

60 divided by 6 is 10.

606 = 10

So x = 10!

x = 10

5 Check

Let's check: put 10 in place of x.

First the left side.

Left: 410 = 4÷210÷2 = 25

Now the right side.

Right: 615 = 6÷315÷3 = 25

Both sides are 2/5.

So x = 10 is right!

Both sides equal 25

So AB = 10.

Let's look back.

First: use the parallel line.

Then: write the proportion.

Then: cross multiply.

Then: remove the 6.

Last: check.

Answer
x = 10
