Step by step

The question

Question: find the integral from 0 to 2 of √(4 − x²).

∫ from 0 to 2 of √4 − x2 dx =

1 Choose the substitution

We have the root of 4 minus x².

Use x = 2 sin θ, because 1 − sin² θ is cos² θ: the minus goes away.

√a² − x²: x = a sin θ
a² + x²: x = a tan θ

So x = 2 sin θ.

θ is an angle.

x = 2 sin θ

Its derivative: dx = 2 cos θ dθ.

dx = 2 cos θ dθ

Careful!

dx does not just become dθ.

dx is 2 cos θ dθ.

Careful: not dx = dθ ✗

2 Simplify the root

Put x = 2 sin θ in: x² is 4 sin² θ.

√4 − x2 = √4 − 4sin2 θ

Take out 4: its root is 2.

= 2√1 − sin2 θ

1 − sin² θ is cos² θ, and its root is cos θ.

= 2 cos θ
1 − sin2 θ = cos2 θ

3 Write it with θ

The root is 2 cos θ, and dx is 2 cos θ dθ.

The limits change: x = 0 gives θ = 0, x = 2 gives sin θ = 1, θ = π/2.

= ∫ from 0 to π/2 of 2 cos θ × 2 cos θ dθ
= 4∫ from 0 to π/2 of cos2 θ dθ

4 Integrate

The half-angle rule turns cos² θ into a plain cos.

cos2 θ = 1 + cos 2θ2

Integrate: θ over 2, plus sin 2θ over 4.

= 4 [ θ2 + sin 2θ4 ] from 0 to π/2

5 Top minus bottom

At π/2: π over 4, and sin π is 0.

At 0 everything is 0.

= 4(π4 + 0 − 0)

So the integral is π, about 3.14.

= π ≈ 3.14

6 Check

Let's check: y = √(4 − x²) is the top of a circle of radius 2.

From 0 to 2 is a quarter of it.

Its area is π r² over 4: π.

The same.

Right!

quarter circle: π r²4 = π × 2²4 = π

Let's look back.

First: choose the substitution.

Then: simplify the root.

Then: write it with θ.

Then: integrate.

Then: top minus bottom.

Last: check.

Answer
= π ≈ 3.14

Your turn
