Expand 4(x + 6).

Step by step, with the reason for every step · GCSE Maths Foundation Paper 1 · GCSE Maths

Step by step

The question

Question: simplify 4(x + 6).

Simplify means: write it shorter, with the same value.

4(x + 6)

1 Open the brackets

The 4 in front of the bracket multiplies every part inside.

a(b + c) = ab + ac

So we write 4 times each part.

= 4(x) + 4(6)

4 times x is 4x.

4 times 6 is 24.

= 4x + 24

2 Check

Let's check.

We pick a small number for each letter: x = 2.

Any number works, and a small one keeps the sums easy.

We put it into the question.

Question: 4 × (2 + 6) = 4 × 8 = 32

Now into our answer.

Answer: 4 × 2 + 24 = 8 + 24 = 32

Both give 32.

Same value, so 4x + 24 is right!

Both give 32

Let's look back.

First: open the brackets.

Last: check.

Answer
= 4x + 24

Your turn

Try this one yourself, then check your answer:

Simplify 3(x + 4)
Show the answer
3x + 12
